To mark our Golden Anniversary celebrations in 2006 it was decided to install a new stained glass window above the altar at the east end of the church.
The fire of 1953 destroyed the original stained glass design and when the architect redesigned the church it was decided leave the glass clear to allow natural light to flood the chancel and the altar.
In December 2005 we learnt of a bequest from a faithful member of the church. It was their request that the money be put towards a fund for a new stained glass window to replace the one lost in the fire.
Following the bequest, a number of donations were received and in early 2007 we reached our target of raising £10,000.
The theme of the window is 'New Creation' and the Parochial Church Council commissioned architectural glass artist,
Alan Davis to produce the new window.
Revd Lynda Gough, said; "The window will be a constant reminder of God's faithful love to us from generation to generation".
Here's a timescale regarding how the window took shape.
Sunday 12th November 2006
Members of the PCC were shown a pencil sketch of a proposed design for the new window. Feedback was very positive and the artist, Alan Davis will now produce a detailed coloured design.
Sunday 14th January 2006
PCC members were shown a colour copy of the design for the new stained glass window.
Tuesday 16th January 2007
At the full PCC meeting, members met with artist Alan Davis and saw the original colour drawing for the stained glass window. Members were able to ask questions and Mr Davis talked through his design to explain the finer details. Following a short discussion the PCC voted to proceed with the design and apply for faculty from the Diocese.
March 2007
In March we were informed that the proposed design had been approved by the DAC. We are now awaiting final approval from the Chancellor before the commission can be created.
June 2007
Faculty for the new window has been granted and the artist Alan Davis has commenced work on creating the new window.
August 2007
Christopher Luke had exclusive access to the work in progress and photographs from his visit can be found in the
church gallery.
October 2007
The window has been completed and is due to be installed week commencing 12th November.
November 2007
The window was installed in mid November. Pictures are available in the church
gallery.
