Chernobyl Children Lifeline

In 2006, St Paul’s, Whitworth and St John’s Kirk Merrington joined together to support the World Vision Churches in Partnership project.
They set themselves a target of raising £1,000 a year (over three years), to support a community in one of World Vision’s target areas. Following much thought and prayer it was decided to sponsor a community in Lori, Armenia.

Three years on and with our commitment to the World Vision project at an end, the small steering group looked at other projects and following approval by the Parochial Church Council, is pleased to announce that the new Churches in Partnership project will support The Chernobyl Children Lifeline charity.
The Chernobyl nuclear accident of April 1986 resulted in the contamination of a considerable part of Belarus and Northern Ukraine. Millions of children were and still are at high risk of contracting cancer and leukaemia. The main objective of the Chernobyl Children Lifeline is to bring children to the UK for recuperation. A month-long visit in the UK can prolong a child’s life by two years and 165 volunteer groups across the country have brought tens of thousands of children here for holidays.
St Paul’s, Whitworth and St John’s intend to raise £1,000 a year to help the charity. £500 will pay the airfare for one child, £250 will sponsor a child and their family and £250 will be used to take a visiting group of children for a day’s outing.
A launch event was held in October 2009 and raised nearly £500 and the steering group would like to thank the Cooperative for their sponsorship of the event.
Throughout the year there will be fundraising events to raise our £1,000 contribution. Keep checking the events section of the website for details of future fundraisers.
