Parish mourns former organist

Joe Prest in 2005, shortly before his retirementTributes have been paid to Joe Prest who has died aged 88.

Up until his retirement in 2005, Joe played the organ at St Paul’s Church for 20 years and was hugely respected by everyone who knew him.

As a talented musician, Joe played the organ, piano and violin, and was a composer and artist who was methodical in everything that he did.

Many of his compositions were performed at St Paul’s including ‘How Can We Ever Doubt’, written especially for a flower festival in 1987. And Joe’s arrangements for the annual carol services were just extraordinary.

Back in the 1980s Joe gave a group of enthusiastic singers the opportunity to pursue their talent and it was his vision and leadership that has made the  Choir what it is today.

Choir member Pauline Storey said: “Joe had a real passion for music and he gave us the enthusiasm to sing praises to the Lord in so many wonderful ways.

“He was a strict task master, but he got us to perform and he taught us everything we know about music. Quite simply, we were his girls.”

St Paul's Centre launches new fundraising appeal

Revd Lynda Gough outside the St Paul's CentreSince the former Church Hall reopened as the St Paul’s Centre in June, requests from community groups and individuals to hire the facilities have poured in, showing just how valued the Centre has become.

However despite the appealing interior decoration and new facilities, the exterior of the Centre looks no different to anyone passing by. A cut in funding meant the original project, which would have included adding a second floor, had to be scaled back, and this meant all the money we had secured was taken up on refurbishing the interior and left no money to improve the outside of the building.

The original windows  throughout the Centre remain and are in desperate need of replacing, along with the facia boards which are in a poor state of repair.

Revd Lynda Gough shows parishioners the rundown exterior of the CentreChair of the St Paul's Centre, the Revd Lynda Gough said: “The local community have been really supportive of the Centre and have been so generous in their donations to help us get where we are.

“It’s just so heartbreaking to see the outside looking so rundown when the interior is warm and welcoming for people using the Centre. That’s why I’m appealing to people to help us raise more funds to see the project through to completion.”

Anyone who would like to donate towards the extra work can send a cheque, made payable to ‘St Paul's (Spennymoor) Centre’ to 30 Jubilee Close, Spennymoor, Co Durham DL16 6GA, or by calling the Revd Lynda Gough on 01388 815471.
